Road Safety Performance and Investment Opportunities - Britain's Motorways and 'A' Roads - Crash Risk Mapping Results 2023 (Covering 2016-2018 and 2019-2021)
In 2019-2021, there was an average of more than 10,500 fatal and ‘adjusted’ serious crashes (the latter adjusted for under-reporting) on the British crash risk mapping network each year. This network of motorways and ‘A’ roads represents less than 13% of Britain’s total road length, but almost 60% of fatal road crashes, and more than 40% of serious road crashes, occur on these roads.
The Strategic Road Network and Major Road Network (important local authority roads) in England are combined to support fair (like-for-like) comparison with strategic roads in Scotland and Wales.
