Maximising Accessibility of Telematics Speed (2024)

The relationship between the speed of a vehicle and the severity of an incident is well-established and intuitive; faster vehicles have a greater amount of kinetic energy to transfer to the occupants or to external bodies during an impact. The relationship between vehicle speed and the risk of a crash occurring is more complicated and should be considered in tandem with other aspects of driver behaviour.

This project aimed to make telematics speed measurement data available via a dedicated platform to enable more refined understanding of vehicle behavioural speeds for use in road safety interventions and to develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and guidance documents to support the use of such data.
